A
fascinating walk and talk on Bangalore's history!
Chiara Diack, UK
|
Was
great for a newcomer to the city. Definitely worth
waking up for.
Mary
Breeding, US research scholar
Highly
recommended if you want to know a little more than
the guide
books would tell you about the city you live in.
A must for expats, and
those who enjoy a "cultural / historical leisure
walk"!
Bindoo
Purnaiya, 7th generation Bangalore resident
You know why Bangalore is on the minds of 21st
century Americans - now learn why 19th century Britain
was just as excited about this city.
Manohar
Rao, Long time Bangalore resident
A very good reason to
be up early on a week-end. Perhaps as stimulating
as golf on a three hour course.
Krishna
Chidambi, Longtime Bangalore resident
I
discovered new things about a city that I have lived
in all my life!

The
period from Queen Victoria's death (1901) to Indian Independence
(1947) was marked by dramatic changes in world affairs.
The World Wars and the decline of the Empire dominated world
headlines. Each
of these events left their mark on Bangalore, and Bangalore,
in turn, left its mark on the Empire in many ways. In
its own way, Bangalore presented a microcosm of what was
happening on the world stage. The British Cantonment area
was governed directly by the Crown, while the adjoining
town of "Bengaluru" was part of Mysore state,
ruled by the Maharaja of Mysore through several illustrious
Dewans (or Prime Ministers). This unique political construct
created its own Tale of Two Cities, with
the relationship between these twin cities and their inhabitants
determining the course of Bangalore's growth and development.
On this walk, you will visit a 19th Century cathedral,
see elegant 19th Cent and early 20th Cent buildings, and
gain an appreciation of the relationship between British
Bangalore and Mysore State and how that played a role in
making the Bangalore of today. Hear about Bangalore's
contribution to the British military effort, and learn about
some famous Indian and British residents. End the walk with
one of the best aerial views of Bangalore, and a sumptuous
buffet breakfast.
Come and appreciate how the
twin cities of British Cantonment and Indian Bengalooru
merged to form present day Bangalore city, what makes it
tick, why it is considered the city of the future. See

The gate (the only one that is open) is on Lavelle
Road (behind Koshys).
- If you come along MG Road from the Brigade Road
side, take a left at the END of MG Road along Lavelle
Road (just AFTER the cathedral) and then a left
again along the cathedral walls to reach the entrance

- If you come along Queens Road, with the Cricket
staium to your left, then go straight along Lavelle

to reach the entrance gate. If you reach Koshys
to your left, you have gone too far, the gate is
right opposite the side entrance of the Bowring
Club.
-If you come along St Marks Road, take a left on
the lane BEFORE Koshys. If you reach Barista/1912
you have come too far.
